AWARD-WINNING ARTIST OF
WALKING DEAD
& MARVEL
ZOMBIES!
ARTHUR
SUYDAM
"The
Zombie King"
(Comics Creator, Writer, Artist -
Marvel Zombies,
Deadpool, Batman, Army of Darkness)
Award winning
creator and Marvel artist Arthur
Suydam’s meteoric rise
to superstardom for his work for the smash hit series
Marvel Zombies
broke graphic novel records, immediately placing the
artist in the
category of comic legend.
Recent awards include: The Spike TV, Scream Award
(best writer, best
artist, best comic of the year), the prestigious,
Spectrum Gold Award
for Institutional Art (2006), The San Sebastian Film
Festival Lifetime
Achievement Award, from the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore
Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous fan-site
favorite awards
across the globe. Suydam’s short story Christmas Carol
was chosen for
The Mammoth Book of Horror and Legends and The Art of
Painted Comics
(2008).
The Suydam family Art Legacy in New York reads like a
whos-who in
American art beginning in the 16th century when the
family came over to
fight in the Indian Wars on Hudson, establishing a
Dutch trading post,
which later became New Amsterdam and eventually New
York . At the
outset of the Civil-War, Hudson River painters James
and Henry Suydam ,
along with contemporaries Frederick Church, Thomas
Cole, Albert
Beirstadt, John Kensett and Sanford Gifford helped win
American artists
recognition worldwide for the first time. James
Suydam’s work hung in
the New York Academy Museum. Great-uncle E.H. Suydam
is one of
America’s most renowned architectural artists, with
drawings hanging in
the White House and Museum of New York. Arthur Suydam
and contemporary
Richard Corben are credited with first introducing
fully painted
sequential art to comics in the early 70s and 80s.
Arthur Suydam’s popular covers have graced the covers
of Marvel
Zombies, Dead Days, Deadpool Merc with a Mouth, The
Misfits Devil’s
Rain, Land of the Dead, Raise the Dead, Batman,
Wolverine, Fantastic
Four, X-men, Ghost Rider, Thor, Spider Girl and The Oz
Chronicles. In
2008 Marvel released an exclusive hard cover tribute
to the works of
this unique artist entitled Marvel Zombies, The Covers
dedicated to
Suydam’s ground-breaking work. Additional recent works
include, Army of
Darkness, Savage Tales, Red Sonja and the smash hit
Army of Darkness
vs. Marvel Zombies, Batman vs. Predator, Conan the
Barbarian, Tarzan
and House of Secrets, and The Tick .
Suydam’s own projects are numerous and include Mudwogs
and Mudwogs II,
and The Adventures of Cholly & Flytrap, Center
City, released
through Radical Entertainment, Giants, Bedtime Stories
for the
Incarcerated, Fireflies, The Day it Rained Eggs, Love
Me, Love My
Demons and many more.
A life-long fan of Marvel comics, Suydam also branches
out with select
projects that include film noir for Hard Case Crime,
where Suydam
provides retro-inspired covers for Robert Bloch’s
Shooting Star, Fright
by Cornell Woolrich and Noir pulp master Mickey
Spillane’s final novel,
Dead Street, released this year.
As a world class musician Suydam has composed and
performed numerous
film soundtracks. A list of Suydam’s band members
reads like a whos-who
list of Rock’s legends including musicians from: Bob
Dylan, Paul Mc
Cartney’s Wings, Steely Dan, Paul Simon Group, Aretha
Franklin, The
Stones, Billy Joel and many more. Suydam’s current
group The Gotham
Playboys recorded 3 albums and won the Grammy for The
Sessions with
Bruce Springsteen in 2005.
Suydam is a member of the Society of Illustrators and
lives and works
in Manhattan’s East Village.
